Prayers for November 18, 2001

Proper 28, 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Call to Worship (Based on Ps 18 & Isaiah 12)

Leader: The Lord is our rock, our fortress and our deliverer,
People: Our God, our rock in whom we take refuge.
Leader: We call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised.
People: We shall sing praises to the Lord, for God has done gloriously;let this be known to the ends of the earth.

Prayer of Confession

O God of time, we live as if there were no end in sight. We live as if You did not care how we have spent our lives and used the talents and resources You gave us. We have wasted our time on frivolous pursuits and turned down opportunities to serve because it was inconvenient for our plans. We worry too much and fail to entrust ourselves and our plans to You. Forgive us for all that is wasteful in our lives, and enable us to face the future with the confidence that all things are in Your hands. This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of Dedication

All things come from You, O God. Our faith, our health and possessions. Your Son has called us to use these in Your service, and so we come dedicating these gifts, and our lives, anew to You. Amen.

Pastoral Prayer

Great God, Creator of the heavens and the earth, in whom we tiny humans live and move and have our being, we give You thanks for the gift of life. This day, and all our days, is in Your hands. You began time and will conclude it. You made the earth, and You will end it. Help us to live with the knowledge that this is true. Save us from useless worry and speculation about the end. Teach us to live each day as it were our first and our last so that we might start out with a fresh zeal and seize every opportunity as a way of serving You.

Give us faith and courage to meet each difficulty with confidence, and grant us the gratitude to give You thanks for each success. Watch over our families and friends. Bring us into a better understanding and reconciliation with our enemies. Strengthen us and our church that we might be better instruments of Your love in encouraging others to believe in the good news of Your coming kingdom. Guide and encourage the leaders of our nation, state, and local governments in seeking Your righteousness and judgment. Save them from self-interest and from too easily pursuing programs that offer easy answers just because they are popular. Help our nation to follow ways of peace and reconciliation among the nations of the world. Watch over and guard the poor, the exploited, and those despised because of their race. May we as a church become the kind of fellowship where Your love is demonstrated so that others will be drawn to You. This we ask in the name of the head of the church, even Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
