Prayers for September 23, 2001

Proper 20, 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Invocation

God of wisdom, our lives are filled with decisions. As we listen for Your Word, show us the way we are to go. Guide us in Your paths, so that our decisions might eventually lead us into Your eternal home. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

God of goodness and mercy, we admit that we prepare for the future in so many ways. We invest in IRAs and mutual funds to prepare for our retirement. We purchase airline tickets and make hotel reservations months in advance to prepare for our vacation. But when it comes to our future with You, we spend so little time
preparing ourselves. We indulge our momentary desires, giving little thought to their long-term consequences. Gracious Lord, forgive our spiritual shortsightedness. Help us to look to our eternal future, so that we may repent and ready ourselves for the day that is coming. In the name of our Savior we pray. Amen.

Prayer of Dedication

Almighty God, giver of all wealth: we return to You a portion of what You have given to us. Instead of merely saving up treasure for our use here on earth, guide us to save up for ourselves treasure in heaven. Rather than expending our wealth on what is perishable, lead us to invest our wealth in what is imperishable, so that we may be fully prepared for the glorious day that is to come. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Pastoral Prayer (Based on 1 Timothy 2:1-7)

King of kings and Lord of lords: You are the master of all creation. Yet You have ordained certain men and women to rule over the nations to ensure justice and to provide for the welfare of the people. Therefore this day we pray for presidents and prime ministers. We raise our prayers for MP's and senators. We intercede on behalf of rulers and cabinet members. And we offer prayers of thanks for mayors and magistrates.

Grant, O God, Your guidance to all who sit in positions of authority, that they may govern with fairness and equity. Lead them to make decisions that are right and good. And keep them from selfish ambition and proud thoughts. For You alone, O God, are the one supreme ruler of all the world, the one to whom all authorities will be held to account. May Your name ever be praised. Amen.
