Prayers for September 9, 2001

Proper 18, 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Invocation

O Lord, our Lord, You give to us wisdom, even out of the mouths of babes. Grant that our worship on this September morning shall refresh our spirits and renew the strength of our bodies. Give us new visions. Grant us new challenges. Grant us Your gracious and divine Love. Grant us most of all comfort in the strong Name of Jesus the Christ. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

Lord God, we confess that we often prefer subjecting others to our own will, rather than allowing them the freedom to pursue Your will. We envision our own desires for the world, yet we can not see the weakness of our vision. Forgive our shortsightedness, Lord. Like Philemon, we need Your Word to persuade and correct us. Open our eyes and ears, Lord, and show us how we may together live the Christian Way. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

Prayer of Dedication

Gracious Lord, You've created us and provided us with all that we have. In thanksgiving we offer these simple gifts in return, asking that they be used to the glory of Your reign. Grant that these gifts may be ordered in such a way that would bring ourselves and our world into greater communion with You. In Jesus' name we dedicate this offering, Amen.

Pastoral Prayer

Gracious and Loving God, we come seeking help for those who are struggling with despair. May they in their discouragement discover new light. Grant them Your healing Presence and a deeper sense of Your gracious Spirit to quiet their fears and lessen their anxiety. Give to each one the blessings of new life, new health and new hope. May they recognize the gifts of healing and wholeness coming to them through the doctors and nurses who minister to their physical needs. May they receive with new gratitude of heart the spiritual comfort and consolation offered by You. May they see You at work in each human being that treats them, ministers to them and pastors to them. To the Glory of God and for the refreshment of Your children and servants, we pray. Amen.
