Prayers for August 12, 2001
19th Sunday in Ordinary Time
10th after Pentecost, Proper 14

Invocation
O Lord our God, You are our rock and our shield. In times of danger and turmoil, when fear and anxiety well up within us, draw near to us and calm our troubled hearts. Even now, in this time of worship, empower us to hear Your words of reassurance. For we trust that just as You have been our God in ages past, You will be our God for ages yet to come. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.

Prayer of Confession
Merciful Lord, so often you have told us, “Do not be afraid.” Yet we continue to fear. You have told us You will provide for all our needs. Yet with anxious hearts, we feverishly toil to take care of ourselves. We confess that we worry because we do not trust. We do not trust that You are able to meet our needs. We do not trust Your forgiveness, that You are willing to overlook our sins, and provide for us despite our unworthiness. We do not trust You enough to take the control of our lives out of our hands and to place it into Your hands. Gracious God, forgive our sin and release us from our fears. In the name of Christ our Lord we pray. Amen.

Pastoral Prayer
Eternal Lord, fear is a subject that we are too familiar with. With the ups and downs of the economy, we fear whether our jobs will be there for us in the coming year. With the spread of disease, we fear what illnesses might assault our bodies. With the pollution that contaminates our air and water, we fear what kind of future our children have in store. We live in fear of the dangers we know of. And we live in fear of the perils that are lurking in the shadows.
God of compassion, take aware our fears. Like the shepherds who trembled when the Christmas angels came to them, take away our fears that we may hear the good news of Your gospel. Like the women who went to the tomb with troubled hearts on Easter morning, take away our fears that we may discover the wonders of Your boundless love and power. Enable us to behold that every time the forces of evil seek to say “No” to us in some way, Your “Yes” is more mighty. Deliver us from despair, and raise us up to new life. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

Prayer of Dedication
Lord of all, just as You freely give to us, may we freely give to others. May we use our time, our talents, and our treasure in faithful ways. For, as You have told us, where our treasure is, there will our heart be also. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
